Wagner

The Flying Dutchmen is one of the new London opera productions. Bryn Terfel is back in the lead role. Apparently he had trouble with the role of Wotan in Wagner two years ago, but now he’s back and better than ever. The actors are able to project great strength and emotion during the show, and are able to give the characters exactly what they need. The design of the show is also very good and will give you just the right feel for the style of the play. If you don’t like opera, this may be the show for you. Yes, it’s kind of hard when there’s a show that’s as involved in this one, and this one can seem very long. But it’s opera done very well, which is sometimes hard to find!

Keen on Keane

One of my favorite rock groups recently is Keane. If you don’t know, they are a piano rock band that play indie-style music. They have released four studio albums so far, and each one reaches high up on the charts. The most recent, “Spriralling” reached #1 on the UK Albums Chart quickly and a few weeks later made #7 on the Billboards Chart. It’s an exciting time to be a Keane fan. Not only did they release their newest album in October, but are also in the process of a concert tour of several locations, with possibly more still to be announced. The newest album was intended to have a much more organic, from-the-heart feel than some of their previous efforts. You can get Keane tickets by clicking on the link!

Oscars for the Grouch

The Oscars are coming up on Sunday and now we’re looking forward to an exciting situation. The show is expected to be good, with Hugh Jackman in the role of host. The hosting job has been up and down, no matter who’s in it, but now we’re going to have to see what this year’s ceremony brings. How difficult can it be to tell a few jokes and then introduce someone. Anyway, there are bunch of movies up for Oscars, and they all seem to be about persecuted people, so we’ll have to see which group is most favored. Or maybe just which film is better..

Mr. Brown

Chris Brown has apologized for the situation with his girlfriend, or ex-girlfriend, Rihanna. He’s not apologizing for doing anything wrong, because according to him, he didn’t. More on that in a second. But he is “sorry and saddened” by the allegations leveled against him in the press and on the internet regarding this situation. This comes a full week after the event and it’s a little bit suspicious. But what about that issue with what happened or didn’t happen? The Hollywood entertainment scene is full of rumors at all times and it’s hard to separate the true from the false. But it seems like all the information coming out from Rihanna’s family and everyone else involved has been pointing more and more to a more violent confrontation between them. More information to come.

Best (stolen?) Song!

Coldplay won the Grammy last night for Best Song of the year. Their song, Viva la Vida, is a nice song, especially with it’s nice introduction and a kind of floating melody. The song is certainly one of their best and we really like it. But let’s not deceive ourselves. Another singer has complained that the song is actually stolen from him. Joe Satriani has filed a claim that the song is taken from him, and the complaint is working its way through the system. There are very similar parts of this song, including rather large sections of the melody pulled right from his song. Or so it seems. Let’s be clear, it’s not been proven, but hearing the song, it’s kind of hard not to notice a strong similarity.

Rent

Make sure you see the Rent travelling musical if you get the chance. This version combines a lot of the original cast so you can see the musical more or less the way it originally was. But the review I read about it doesn’t seem to think that it’s that great a show anymore. What was once edgy and touching is now just kind of irrelevant. The cast has brought the show back to parts of the country that have never had the chance to do it before. But AIDS isn’t as big as it was, and the poverty that New York district is completely inaccurate now. It’s just completely different now. But here we are, and you might want to see it anyway.

Dora

Dora the Explorer is a good show, according to this little piece about it from an Australian newspaper. The show tries to be like the show that we know and love from the TV show. It is intended to be interactive for little kids, fully understandable without being annoying for the older people. They do a lot of singing and dancing which really gets the kids all excited. And who doesn’t like a room full of dancing 3-year-olds. It’s quite a lot of fun. We like this show, because it is interactive, teaches and has lots of color and interesting things to show you. What a fun show it is and any kid will just love it too!
